spooky party

ok, on to the halloween party! last friday, erin and I threw a spook fest at my parent's house. we made "lady finger" pretzels, ghostie cookies (that I forgot to take a picture of, darn it), macaroni and cheese gratin (see the recipe here on my food blog), homemade root beer, slime rickeys, green goddess dip with crudites . . . don't you wish you had been there?

I was a french kiss and david was the PERFECT nerd. I can't even tell you how happy it made me.we played the name game and mafia (and me? I just took pictures for my blog.)
the group of ladies were cute.
the group of laddies were even cuter.
then I forced everyone outside to compete in the old fashioned "donuts on a string" game - no exceptions. however, the donuts were pumpkin and caramel apple so no one could resist anyway.
I told you they were good.

it was a good time had by all (I hope). but a little too much stress for my taste. I think I'll stick to simple decorations, a host of halloween flicks and peanut butter popcorn next year.

  1. If you can make good macaroni and cheese - I want to be your new best friend. I need to find a good recipe for it as I have never tasted one I really liked. What a fun party!

  3. Jill,

I found a recipe from Martha Stewart (just like everything else) and it turned out! I've made mac 'n cheese several times before and it turned out curdled and/or just not creamy enough. I think the trick is, when you make the roux, heat up the milk before pouring it into the butter/flour mixture rather than adding cold milk. It's a lot of work but for something special, I think it's fun. I'll post about it more on my food blog: www.thedishondelish.blogspot.com.

  11. Lizzy - thank you!! I am printing it off right now. I think you're right with the tip on the hot milk. All macaroni and cheese recipes I've tried have been overly curdled. Nasty. Thanks for posting it!

  15. I love to make real homemade rootbeer...

I make sassafrass tea (can buy dried bark at some health food stores), add some sugar or sweetner to taste, and then I add dried ice to the hot tea. Voila! Real Homemade Rootbeer!

    You should try it sometime.

  20. I see that poodle skirt. Rock! I was going to go as Sylvia Plath, so I could just wear black, but I'm not a blong. So, I decided to go as an ink spot. Whatever. I'm just lazy.
